Sony Announces PS3 Slim and Price Drop

Today Sony announced the release of the Playstation 3 Slim at Gamescon in Germany. This much anticipated announcement came at the heels of many “leaks” and leaked photographs of the system, many of which turned out to be frauds. PS3 Slim will be priced at $299

However, the news did not end there. While the PS3 Slim hits shelves September 1, effective immediately the old 80-gigabyte system’s price dropped to $299 as well. Pricing for the 160-gigabyte version also dropped $100 to $399.

PS3 Slim will feature a 120-gigabyte hardrive and is about 2/3 of the size of the current model. It is also about 34% lighter and consumes 34% less power.

It appears as if the console war may be back on, and things may be getting more interesting. Is it possible that PS3′s price can go even lower? Possibly. Some analysts believe the PS3 could drop to even $249 by Christmas if sales do not increase.
