The Christian Right – Embarrassingly Pharisaical
May 11
President Obama, a Christian (you have to actually make that clear for some people) has chosen to uphold the National Day of Prayer, but chosen not to have a White House press event for it.
This has caused the Conservative “Christian” Right to slam Obama for not upholding the whorish, limelight seeking tradition of the relatively recent past. Elisabeth Hasselbeck stated that “We should be able to pray as we see fit”.
Who’s stopping her? Does she need the prayers to be on camera for God to hear them? Does she have to be seen praying so that people can see the “Christian” Right being “Christian” in public? Prayer is about communication between an individual and God. To those who believe, it is a way to cause more good, and prevent evil. It is not however, supposed to be a public pounding of the chest, or a cultural assertion.
Rush Limbaugh sees Obama’s action as a possible attempt to phase out or cancel the NDP. The National Day of Prayer Task Force – yeah, you read correctly unfortunately – is hinting that Obama isn’t the kind of Christian President we need in America by saying through their Chairperson Shirley Dobson: “We are disappointed in the lack of
participation by the Obama Administration. At this time in our
country’s history, we would hope our President would recognize more
fully the importance of prayer.”
Translation? Obama must observe this day the way we say so or he’s not being Christian enough.
