Time For a New Speech President Obama – One We Need to Hear

Feb 09

altPresident Barack Obama has taken his case for the near Trillion dollar stimulus package to the American people in full throttle, participating in a Town Hall style meeting where he was questioned by citizens. Only one person really challenged him however, (on the subject of his non-taxpaying appointees) and she was booed soundly before Obama called off the crowd.

The trouble with this Town Hall gesture is that it’s just that, a gesture. Again we have no substance. Our President is merely making use of uninformed people who worship at his altar, to put the pressure on law makers. If this was truly “Change we can believe in”, then President Obama would give a major speech to the American people, and explain piece by piece what the stimulus package will do, why what’s in it is in it, and account for every bit of spending before the vote.

But he doesn’t have to, so he won’t. He doesn’t have to, because he’s greatly enjoying a mile high approval rating. We Americans (for the most part) are so caught up in the moment (still) that he can do no wrong. Not unlike Bush after 9/11. Why would he explain to us this thing in detail when that might only expose the wasteful aspects of it? Why do that when it will only show the American people just how little this will all do to help them get a new job before they lose their house or have to start selling off their possessions for cheap to the vultures? Why would he, when the people, who don’t even know what most of this stimulus package consists of, aren’t resisting it out of sheer blind faith?

The right thing to do would be to do what he does best, and give that speech. In fact, it’s what he should have done from the start. If this thing at base is truly pure and helpful, then explain it to the people President Obama. If law makers wanted to pile on the pork afterward, then they’d have to account for it.

That is what you said you wanted last year when we voted for you.

It costs you nothing to inform us right? Oh that’s right… It does cost you… If we, as a whole understand this package, it won’t pass because it shouldn’t as it currently exists. By pretending that it should pass, and acting as if this is the Change we voted for, you can hold on to the unquestioning sheep for a little longer. But sooner or later, even the most apathetic are going to realize that this is nothing more than another Patriot Act/2008 Bank bailout.

Do right. We’re tired of the politics of “temporarily perceived as good”. How about good. Period?
